Have you tried, or are you practicing intermittent fasting? Many clients I speak to find it difficult to eat in the morning and the old saying that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” seems long gone. But does it work long-term? Over the years I tried most diets and ways of eating that were suggested to me. When the initial excitement wore off, I ended up going back to the time-tested tools of Ayurveda. It’s not a one size fits all approach, but an individual, based on principles and practices that help strengthen digestion.

If you aren’t hungry in the morning but lack energy throughout the day, a lighter breakfast can make all the difference. Having cooked fruit for breakfast is a fun and delicious way to wake up your body. This Ayurvedic smoothie bowl soothes the stomach and gently stills hunger without feeling too heavy. Since it’s lightly cooked and served warm, it is easier to digest.

In Ayurveda, the concept of Agni plays an important role. Agni means fire in Sanskrit and refers to the capacity we have at any given moment to digest what we eat. How strong our fire burns can depend on many things among them how much we eat, if we eat too little, what our sleep is like, if we have cold foods, if we have high demands at work and in life, and whether we are chewing our food well.

Skipping meals can actually make digestion weaker since the body goes into saving mode preserving any energy it has available. Just like a bonfire needs just the right amount of firewood to keep burning, so does our digestive capacity. By having a light breakfast like the one below, you can strengthen your internal fire.

Especially for women, it’s important to give the body security in the form of regular meals. Strong digestion means more energy throughout the day, less bloating, burping and stomach problems. Ayurvedic smoothie bowl

Serves 1 person (with a large appetite) or 2

You need:

  • 2 apples

  • 1 pear

  • 1 tsp ghee

  • 1/2 cm ginger root 

  • 3 tsp fennel seeds 

  • Pinch of black pepper

  • Pinch of salt

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1 small sliced banana

  • 1 medjool date chopped into smaller pieces 

  • A sprinkle of cacao nibs or carob powder if cacao is too stimulating for you.

  • A sprinkle of chia seeds or other toppings.

  • Saucepan

  • Blender or immersion blender


This is how:

  1. Chop up the apples and pear in cubes.

  2. Grate or chop the ginger into small pieces.

  3. In the saucepan, add 1 tsp ghee, grated ginger, 3 tsp fennel seeds, a pinch of black pepper, and a sprinkle of salt.

  4. Let simmer in the oil for 2 minutes at medium heat. Make sure the spices don’t burn.

  5. When you can smell the spices and they are lightly toasted, add in the apple and pear. Stir until the fruit is covered in oil and spices, and let simmer for 2 min.

  6. Add in water to cover the bottom of the pan. Let simmer with a lid on until soft, or 5 min.

  7. While the fruit is cooking, get your toppings ready; slice the banana and chop the dates. Get a few chia seeds ready.

  8. When the fruit is cooked soft, add to a blender and blend until smooth. Alternatively use an immersion blender directly in the pot. Make sure the knife is under the water level to avoid splashing.

  9. Pour the smoothie into a bowl and add your toppings.

  10. Chew well even though it’s liquid, and enjoy all the flavors present.
